Understanding Ovulation and Your Fertile Window

Ovulation is the process by which a mature egg is released from the ovary, travels down the fallopian tube, and becomes available for fertilisation. It typically occurs once per menstrual cycle, approximately 14 days before the next expected period — regardless of total cycle length. For a standard 28-day cycle, this is around day 14; for a 32-day cycle, it would be around day 18.

What Is the Fertile Window?

The fertile window is the period during which sexual intercourse can result in pregnancy. It spans approximately 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days, while the egg is viable for only 12–24 hours after release. The highest probability of conception occurs in the 2 days immediately before and on the day of ovulation.

Natural Family Planning

Ovulation tracking is used both by couples trying to conceive and as a natural method of birth control (Fertility Awareness Method, or FAM). For contraceptive purposes, FAM also involves tracking basal body temperature (BBT) and cervical mucus changes for greater reliability. Used alone, ovulation calculators are not a reliable contraceptive method.

Signs of Ovulation

  • Cervical mucus changes: Becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy (like raw egg white) around ovulation.
  • Basal body temperature (BBT) rise: A small, sustained rise of 0.2–0.5°C after ovulation occurs.
  • Mittelschmerz: A mild one-sided abdominal pain or twinge felt by some women at ovulation.
  • LH surge: Detectable by ovulation predictor kit (OPK) urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get pregnant outside the fertile window?
The probability is very low, as conception requires sperm to meet an egg within about 24 hours of ovulation. However, irregular ovulation means the fertile window can shift, making it important not to rely solely on calendar-based methods for contraception.
What if my cycles are irregular?
This calculator works best for cycles between 21–35 days with relatively consistent length. If your cycles vary significantly, tracking physical ovulation signs (BBT, cervical mucus) or using LH ovulation strips will provide more reliable information.
Does stress affect ovulation?
Yes. High levels of physical or psychological stress can delay or suppress ovulation by disrupting the hormonal signals from the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. This is a common reason for irregular cycles.
How many days after my period do I ovulate?
For a 28-day cycle, ovulation typically occurs around day 14. For a 30-day cycle, around day 16; for a 24-day cycle, around day 10. The number of days from ovulation to the next period (luteal phase) is usually constant at about 14 days.
