Work Days Calculator – Count Business Days Between Dates
Need to know exactly how many business days fall between two dates? Our work days calculator counts all working days (Monday through Friday), separates them from weekends, and lets you exclude public holidays of your choice. It also has an "add working days" mode — enter a start date and a number of business days, and get the exact end date.
What Counts as a Working Day?
In the standard Mon–Fri business week used across most of North America, Europe, and Asia, a working day is any day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or recognized public holiday. Some industries (retail, healthcare, hospitality) may use different schedules, but for office work, finance, and legal deadlines, the Mon–Fri definition is the norm used by this calculator.
How to Exclude Public Holidays
Enter holiday dates in the textarea in YYYY-MM-DD format, one per line (e.g., 2025-01-01 for New Year's Day). The calculator will subtract these days from the working day count. Common public holidays to consider include New Year's Day, Easter Monday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. The specific holidays vary by country, so the tool lets you input whichever dates are relevant to your jurisdiction.
Project Planning Use Cases
Business day counting is critical for:
- Legal deadlines: Court filings, contract notice periods, and statutory response windows are often expressed in business days.
- Project management: Sprint planning and milestone scheduling in Agile typically count working days, not calendar days.
- HR and payroll: Notice periods, probation lengths, and pay periods may be counted in working days.
- Shipping and logistics: "3-5 business days" shipping estimates are standard in e-commerce.
- Financial transactions: Settlement periods (e.g., T+2 for stock trades) count business days.
Adding Business Days to a Date
The second section of the tool answers questions like "What date is 10 business days from today?" This is particularly useful for calculating statutory deadlines, estimating delivery dates, or scheduling follow-ups. The calculator skips Saturdays and Sundays, counting forward only through weekdays until the specified number of working days is reached.
