Metric Weight Units
The metric system uses the gram (g) as its base unit of mass, with prefixes scaling by powers of ten. The kilogram (1,000 grams) is the SI base unit of mass and the most commonly used unit for body weight, food packaging, and shipping worldwide. The metric ton (tonne) equals 1,000 kilograms and is used for large-scale goods and vehicle weights.
Smaller units include the milligram (1/1,000 of a gram), used in medicine and chemistry, and the microgram (1/1,000,000 of a gram), used in pharmaceutical dosing and laboratory science.
Imperial Weight Units
The imperial system uses pounds and ounces for everyday measurements. One pound equals 16 ounces, and one stone (used in UK body weight) equals 14 pounds. One imperial (long) ton equals 2,240 pounds, while the US short ton equals 2,000 pounds (our converter uses the imperial long ton).

Weight vs Mass
Strictly speaking, mass measures the amount of matter in an object (measured in kilograms), while weight measures the gravitational force on that mass (measured in Newtons). However, in everyday usage and in this converter, the terms are used interchangeably since we assume standard Earth gravity.
