To address safety concerns surrounding the 130-year-old structure in Idukki, Kerala has proposed building a new Mullaperiyar dam entirely at its own expense. During the 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting in Mahabalipuram, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan assured Tamil Nadu that Kerala would concede all water rights from the new reservoir to them, leaving the design, location, and building process to Tamil Nadu’s discretion. This offer aims to resolve the longstanding dispute over structural integrity while ensuring Tamil Nadu’s existing water supply remains fully uninterrupted.
