A recent analysis by Ember highlights that India’s aggressive solar energy expansion has successfully curbed fossil-fuel power generation during peak daylight hours. In the first half of 2026, fossil-fuel-based output at 1:00 PM dropped by 10 gigawatts compared to the same period in 2023.
However, once the sun sets, fossil fuel reliance surges. Over that same timeframe, post-sunset fossil power generation climbed by 22 gigawatts to meet sustained high electricity demand when solar output vanishes.
To address this imbalance and alleviate pressure on coal-fired facilities, Ember emphasizes that India must rapidly expand its battery storage capacity and enhance grid flexibility to store daytime solar energy for evening consumption.
